The Swimming Pigs Tour Adventure on Staniel Cay
In the middle of paradise, with billionaires and celebrities for neighbors, is an island populated only by swimming pigs. For decades, this archipelago of 365 islands would remain largely unknown to the world. It would not be a ruthless pirate, pioneering loyalists, a notorious drug kingpin, or the infamous Fyre Festival that would unveil Exuma to the world, but rather the most unlikely of creatures. Appearing in magazines, videos, newspapers, commercials, TV shows, and countless selfies, the Swimming Pigs of Exuma, in the Bahamas, have become a bucket-list sensation and have been named one of the marvels of the universe.
Staniel Cay: Mermaid Tour
A fun surprise waits beneath the waves for snorkelers splashing through the waters on the Staniel Cay Tour around magician David Copperfield’s private islands.
Just off the coast of Rudder Cut Cay, swimmers will find a life-sized sculpture of a mermaid lounging atop the sandy ocean floor. The mermaid waits near the bench of a baby grand piano as if beckoning divers to sit down and play her a tune.
The stainless-steel sculpture is hidden about 12 to 15 feet below the surface and can be a bit difficult to spot when the current stirs up the sand and clouds the water. It makes discovering them on a clear day feel all the more magical. Snorkelers capable of holding their breath for a while like to swim down and pose atop the bench as if they, too, belong in this underwater world.
David Copperfield, who owns multiple private islands within the Bahamas commissioned the artwork from Jason DeCaires Taylor and had it sunk as a quirky surprise for the few, exclusive guests who stay on the private island or those who take boat trips to snorkel off the shore.
Staniel Cay Area: Sunken Drug Plane
Staniel Cay Exuma might be a laid-back beach community known for it’s swimming pigs, but the Exuma chain has a past rooted in piracy and drug smuggling. Back in the 70’s the Medellin Cartel used Norman’s Cay as a drug smuggling base where planes would take off full of cocaine into the US. One of the few remnants of this seedy past is a plane wreck that lies in shallow waters just off the cay perfect for snorkeling exploration. The famous Staniel Cay Plane Wreck is one of the most accessible in the world because of its location in shallow sea water. The wreck happened just a half of a mile away from the busy Staniel Cay Yacht Club. To make this snorkeling even more appealing, the crash site offers many species of coral and fish have built habitats around the Staniel Cay plane wreck as is what often happens on and around sites of wrecks under the sea.
Staniel Cay: Swim and Feed The Turtles Little Farmer’s Cay
Take a Staniel Cay Adventures Tour to Little Farmer’s Cay . This tiny cay has a population of 66.
Little Farmer’s Cay is also home to abundant wildlife, including exotic birds, sea turtles, dolphins, sharks and tropical fish. Deep sea caves and coral reefs are nearby for world-class diving and snorkeling.
Little Farmer’s is located on the banks side of the southern Exuma Cays just 20 nm south of Staniel Cay. It’s easily reached from either the south or north on the banks side. Farmer’s Cay Cut offers access from Exuma Sound, but use caution in this cut. It’s wide, deep and easy to read, but a large swell from sustained easterly winds against an ebb tide can make it a rough ride. The currents are also quite strong.
Located just south of Big Farmer’s Cay, this stretch of pure white sand emerges from blue-green water at low tide. It is widely known as the “Mile-long Sandbar” and is perfect for shelling, sunbathing, and picnicking. You will have it all to yourself on most days!
